About

Skill. Experience. Compassion.

I am passionate about helping people in difficult circumstances. I have spent many years as appointed counsel for people who can’t afford an attorney, as well as volunteering to help political activists. The law is complicated and confusing and often not designed to be accessible or even helpful to the average person. I understand that being involved with the law is usually stressful. I bring compassion and understanding as well as technical skill and experience.

I work for you and I take a whole person approach. We examine the circumstances together and look for solutions both inside and outside the legal system. I often offer advice and assistance that is not legal in nature, but addresses your larger situation.

I thoroughly research and investigate the facts of your case. As appropriate, I consult with experts and investigators to understand the total picture. It is only by having the total picture of you and your case, that I can best advice you and defend you.

As part of my ongoing commitment to excellence, I engage in constant continuing education and training in areas related to my practice. More than just keeping up on the latest changes in the law, I train in forensic science, psychology, criminology and study larger social trends in criminal justice in social policy.

Background

IMG_5373final.jpg

I began my career working at the civil rights firm Minami, Lew & Tamaki being mentored by Garrick Lew, and a few years later I opened my own practice in 2006.

I have taken the unusual approach of becoming skilled in both trial work and appeals. I had the pleasure of working as part time as a staff attorney at the First District Appellate Project where I received extensive training and experience in appellate practice. I was also an intern with the San Francisco Public Defender and worked as extern for the U.S. District Court Judge Martin Jenkins.

Because legal work is very demanding. I take a conscious approach to making sure I’m prepared and present. I practice yoga and meditation: two activities that are essential for me to give my clients my full attention in a calm and non-judgmental manner.
